Get a free evaluation Error -6007 appears while QuickBooks Desktop is opening a company file, when the request to start a session with the data is refused or cut short. It belongs to the -6000 family of codes, which cover failures to reach or read the company file. The message on screen does not say whether the file is damaged, and that distinction decides everything, so this page separates the causes you can clear yourself from the ones that need repair.
When you open a company file, QuickBooks does not simply read it like a document. It asks for a controlled session with the data, confirms that no other session holds a conflicting lock, and runs a quick structural pass before showing you anything. Error -6007 means that request was refused or cut short: another session held the file, the hosting service could not be reached, or the structural pass failed. QuickBooks stops there on purpose, because opening a file partway risks making things worse.
The refusal happens before your bookkeeping data loads, which is why the code appears at the open step rather than mid-task. It is a refusal to proceed, not a crash halfway through, and that difference matters for how you triage it.
Most often the trigger is a lock: the file is already open on another machine, or a crashed session never released it. Next comes hosting: the file lives on a computer whose database service has stopped, or the network descriptor file beside it points at the wrong host. A dropped network connection or restrictive folder permissions can produce the same refusal. Genuine damage is the least common cause, but it happens, usually after a power loss or forced shutdown while the file was being written.
These causes separate cleanly once you look. Lock and hosting faults affect every company file on that machine; damage follows one specific file wherever you copy it.
Close QuickBooks on every computer first, restart the machine hosting the file, then open the file directly on that machine. If it opens there but not from a workstation, the fault is in hosting or the network, not in your data. If it fails on the hosting machine too, move to the next check.
Copy the company file to a local desktop and open the copy in single-user mode. A copy that opens cleanly means the data is healthy and the environment needs the work. If the copy still refuses with the same code, run the built-in verify utility, then rebuild. A rebuild that clears its findings settles it; one that cannot, or an error that returns on the next open, points at damage.
The decisive test is whether the problem travels with the file. Environmental faults stay put: they affect every company file on that machine and fade when you switch machines or users. Damage travels: the same file refuses from any machine, in single-user mode, from a fresh local copy, after a full restart. That pattern, especially soon after a crash or power cut, means the file itself is broken.
A backup is the other tell. If a recent backup opens normally while the live file will not, your data has a clear fault line. You also have a safe copy to work from while the damaged original is repaired.
When the fault is in the file itself, we recover it. Our engineers extract the intact data and rebuild it into a clean company file that opens and works in QuickBooks Desktop. Every file gets a free evaluation first; you receive a firm fixed quote before any work begins, and there is no fee if we cannot fix it.
We do not repair networks, hosting setups, or Windows permissions, and we say so plainly if your evaluation shows an environment problem instead of damage. No. Most cases are a lock, a hosting fault, or a network refusal, and the file is untouched. Damage is confirmed only when the same file fails from every machine, in single-user mode, from a fresh local copy.
Run verify first, then rebuild, because it is free and sometimes settles the matter. If rebuild reports findings it cannot clear, or the error returns on the next open, the damage is deeper than the utility reaches.
You can, and a backup that opens normally gives you a working set of books. How far back that backup reaches, and how much re-entry it costs you, is a decision for you and your accountant rather than for us.
No. We repair damaged company files; hosting, network, and permissions problems belong to your own setup or to Intuit's support channels. The free evaluation will tell you which side of that line your file falls on.
Nothing is due until you accept a quote. The evaluation is free, the quote is firm and fixed before any work starts, and there is no fee if we cannot fix the file.
