Error -6010, 2 means the start attempt on your machine failed outright. The dialog reads "We're sorry, but QuickBooks can't open your company file," and QuickBooks assembles both numbers as the failure happens.
When you open a .QBW file, QuickBooks hands it to the local database service, QuickBooksDBxx, and asks that service to start the file and serve it to you. The -6 prefix places the failure at that server stage. Here the start attempt failed outright rather than being refused by an engine already running. Users report -6094, 0 in the same situation, and both codes mean the database never started on that machine.
One warning about the second number. The 2 is not a SQL Anywhere SQLCODE; it is a QuickBooks-internal flag, and searching the engine's error tables for it will return unrelated faults.
The likeliest cause is a hosting conflict. In multi-user mode exactly one computer hosts the file, and every other workstation connects to that host. If your copy of QuickBooks tries to host while another machine already has the file open, the local start fails and this pair appears.
Next comes Windows itself. The QuickBooksDBxx service, where xx matches your QuickBooks year, can be stopped, missing, or blocked by a firewall or antivirus. A stopped service and a hosting conflict look identical on screen, so settle the hosting question first.
Work in this order, because each answer narrows the next step. 1) Ask who has the file open, and on which machine; that machine is the host. 2) On a workstation, open the file through the network path to the host, not a local copy. 3) On the host, press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and find QuickBooksDBxx. 4) If the service is stopped, start it and set it to Automatic. 5) If it is missing, the database server component needs reinstalling. 6) If it runs and the error stays, check firewall and antivirus rules on that machine.
Each result tells you something. If the file opens once you connect to the real host, the file was never the problem. If starting the service clears the error, the cause was environmental. If the service runs, hosting is right, and the open still fails, suspect the file itself.
Usually not. This pair indicts the start attempt, not your data, and most cases end at the hosting or service stage. Damage becomes the working theory when the file fails from every machine, including the host, with the same -6xxx code. The same applies if it refuses single-user mode on the host, or if a crash or power loss hit while it was open.
A backup makes a clean test. If last night's backup opens and verifies while the live file will not, the live copy is damaged and the machine is fine. If the backup fails too, return to the environment.
When the checks point at the file rather than the machine, that is our work. We examine the damaged company file, rebuild what broke inside it, and return a file that opens normally. The evaluation is free, you receive a firm fixed quote before any work begins, and no fix means no fee. It is a QuickBooks-internal failure flag, not a database engine SQLCODE. Searching SQL Anywhere error tables for it will return unrelated faults, so do not troubleshoot from those results. The first number marks the database-server stage, and the second narrows how the start attempt failed.
Both mean the database could not start on the machine in front of you, and people often see them in the same incident. This pair reports a start attempt that failed outright rather than being refused by a running engine, which is why hosting and the service come first.
Only if QuickBooksDBxx is missing from services.msc, which points at the database server component rather than your data. Reinstalling that component is installation repair, and it is not work we perform. We are an Intuit-Authorized Reseller of QuickBooks Desktop if you find you need a licence.
Almost certainly not. If the file opens on any other machine, the data is intact and the fault sits with hosting or the service on the failing machine. Finish the checks above before paying anyone, including us.
