Get a free evaluation Error -6175, 0 appears when QuickBooks cannot reach the database service that should be serving your company file. The dialog tells you little beyond "We're sorry, but QuickBooks can't open your company file." The zero at the end is quietly good news: the database engine never got far enough to judge the file itself.
In multi-user mode, the machine that holds your file runs a database service in the background. When you open the company file from a workstation, QuickBooks asks that service to serve the data and waits for a go-ahead. With this code, the answer never comes: the service is not running where QuickBooks expects it, or the request never arrives.
The pair of numbers is assembled while the program runs, so the finished code is built rather than looked up. The second number carries the engine's own verdict on your file, and a zero means no verdict came back at all. The breakdown sits on the QuickBooks side of the connection, before anyone examined your data.
The leading cause is hosting turned on in the wrong place. Only the server that physically stores the file should host it, yet workstations sometimes end up hosting too. Several machines then compete to serve one file, and your request lands on a machine that is not holding it. This variant fails for every user, every time, in multi-user mode.
Two others follow. The database service runs under a Windows account named QBDataServiceUser. If a Windows update or password change strips its rights, the service cannot start or read the folder holding your file, and Windows Services will show it stopped. Finally, a firewall that blocks QBW32.exe, QBUpdate.exe, QBDBMgr.exe, or QBDBMgrN.exe on the host lets a local open succeed while a network open fails.
Often, yes, and in a fixed order. On each workstation, choose File, then Utilities; if you see Stop Hosting Multi-User Access, that machine is hosting and should stop. Then toggle hosting off and on once on the server, so the service re-registers the file. Give QBDataServiceUser administrator rights, let those four executables through the firewall on the host, and try the file again after each change.
Each result narrows the cause. Clearing workstation hosting alone fixes it when two machines were competing to serve the file. A service that will not stay running points at the QBDataServiceUser account. A file that opens on the host but not from a workstation leaves the firewall as the suspect.
Usually not, and the zero is the reason. The engine never reached a file-level verdict, so the failure sits on the connection side. Most -6175, 0 cases are resolved by the checks above, with no repair at all.
Two tests settle it once hosting, rights, and the firewall are clean. Open the file in single-user mode directly on the host; if it opens there but not over the network, the file is fine and the environment is not. Then open the QuickBooks sample company file from a workstation. If the sample comes up and yours still fails, the trouble is inside your file, usually announced by a different code with a non-zero second number.
When the sample test points at your file rather than your network, that is our work. The file gets a free evaluation first, you receive a firm fixed quote before any repair begins, and no fix means no fee. Hosting, permissions, and firewall settings stay with you or your IT support; we repair company files, not Windows.

Usually no. The zero means the database engine returned no verdict on the file, so the failure happened before your data was examined. Most cases clear once hosting, service rights, and firewall settings are corrected.
QuickBooks assembles the pair while the program runs. The second number carries the engine's own verdict, and a zero means no verdict came back, which places the failure on the QuickBooks side of the connection.
No. One machine should host: the server that physically stores the file. On a workstation, choose File, then Utilities; you should see Host Multi-User Access rather than Stop Hosting Multi-User Access. When workstations host too, they compete to serve the file and this code appears.
The environment, most likely. A file that opens locally in single-user mode is readable, so the fault is in the serving layer: hosting in the wrong place, the QBDataServiceUser account, or the firewall blocking the database executables on the host.
No. Our work is the company file itself. Hosting configuration, Windows permissions, and firewall rules belong to you or your IT support, and we would rather say so than sell repair you do not need. If the file is damaged, it gets a free evaluation, a fixed quote before work begins, and no fix means no fee.
