Get a free evaluation Error 6087 sits in the 6000 series, the family QuickBooks raises when a company file will not open. The dialog tells you the file cannot be reached; the number tells you where the open sequence broke. Most often the cause is a hosting or network setting you can correct yourself, and this page helps you separate that from genuine file damage.
QuickBooks does not read a company file directly. It hands the open request to a database service, which opens the file, checks the transaction log sitting beside it, and only then lets you in. Error 6087 appears when that sequence stalls just where the service reaches for the file.
That is why this code shows up most often in multi-user setups. The machine holding the file does the opening; your workstation only asks. When the handshake between them fails, or the file fails its own checks, you get a number instead of a ledger.
Hosting set on the wrong computer leads the list: the file sits on one machine while another believes it is the server. Close behind is the database service itself, not running or never told to scan the folder that holds the file. Firewall and antivirus software can also block the service between the two machines, and changing 6000-series numbers across retries usually points that way.
The file-side causes sit behind those. A damaged or mismatched transaction log can fail the pre-open check, and so can real damage inside the company file, often after a power loss or a dropped connection mid-save. A damaged installation is the least common cause, and it shows itself differently, because sample files fail too.
Often yes, and the checks are safe in this order. Try the file from a second computer first: if it opens there, the file is fine and the fault is local to the first machine. Then open a sample company file on the failing machine; a sample that opens clears the installation and points at your file or its host.
Next, confirm hosting is on at the machine holding the file and off everywhere else, and run the database server manager's scan on that folder. Last, copy the file and its .TLG to a local desktop and open it there. A file that opens locally is a network problem; a file that fails locally is the file.
Test a recent backup before concluding anything. A backup that opens while the working file fails, same machine, single-user mode, is the clearest proof of damage. So is an error that never moves: same code, every machine, local copy included.
Environment problems wander instead, appearing on one workstation only or changing code between attempts. Firewalls, folder permissions, and the installation belong to you or your IT person; we do not repair Windows or network settings. When the file itself is broken, that work is ours.
Our engineers repair damaged and unreachable company files, including files that still fail with 6087 after every environment check passes. We work on a copy, your original stays untouched, and you receive the recovered data back as a working company file.
Every file gets a free evaluation first, you receive a firm fixed quote before any work begins, and no fix means no fee. For sibling codes in the 6000 family, see our <a href="/Quickbooks-Error-Codes.aspx">QuickBooks error code guide</a>. Usually not. The file refuses to open because the open sequence failed, not because the records evaporated. In most cases the data is still inside and recoverable once the file is repaired.
Only if the installation is damaged, which is the least likely cause. Test a sample file first: if the sample opens, reinstalling will not help, because the installation is not the problem.
No. Rename it if you experiment, never delete it, and always work on a copy. That log is the recovery trail for transactions not yet written into the main file.
You can, and it may get you working today. How far back to go is a decision for you and your accountant; repairing the damaged file usually preserves the newer entries.
No. Hosting configuration, firewalls, folder permissions, and the QuickBooks installation are outside our repair service. We repair the company file itself, and nothing else.
